Return of cancer.

Hi. I had surgery For stage 4 kidney cancer and a hysterectomy stage sarcoma at the same time (July 2024). I finished chemotherapy on 23 December and started brachytherapy January for 2 weeks. I had a scan 2 weeks later and then an mri and have been told I have a 3 inch cancer in the muscle next to my rectum. Is it possible to get cancer back so soon?

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your situation, you've been through a lot.

Unfortunately, yes, cancer can sometimes come back quite quickly after treatment. Some cancers are faster growing than others, and if even a few cancer cells remained after treatment, they can start to grow again. It's also possible that this new finding on the scan was already there but was too small to be seen on earlier scans.

Your specialist team will go through your options with you, whether that's more treatment, surgery or other approaches to help manage things as they are familiar with all your medical details.

I hope this reply helps a little. You may find it more helpful to ring and chat this through with one of the helpline nurses. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    Kind regards,
