Is it a lump in my breast?

I noticed the other day my nipple and areola starting itching like crazy , and had a look and found a fair few of bumps on the aerola part of my nipple. I’ve not had any indents on skin, rashes or skin changes so this is new to me.

i then started feeling my breast and noticed that there is a dense sort of feeling behind my nipple which is somewhat sore if you put a fair amount of pressure on it. My boobs have always been slightly bumpy as I can feel the areoli / breast tissue on my breast. I can’t tell if this is a lump because it’s so hidden and because I have bumpy boobs anyways. I am due to go travelling for 2 weeks at the end of March, and I am worried to go to the doctors right now in case I need to go to appointments etc whilst I’m away.
Given the info I’ve just provided, would you say this is a concern of breast cancer?

  • Hi Aleisha and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to read that you are worried about symptoms you are experiencing and can understand you wanting to find out more.

I'm afraid we are unable to diagnose or tell anyone if anything is the matter. While it’s possible that your symptoms are not related to cancer, it’s best to be safe and have yourself checked.

Only a doctor can make a medical assessment so the best thing to do is to go and see your GP. They will assess you and decide whether you need to go for tests.

It might be helpful to know that the symptoms of breast cancer can also be more likely to be due to non-cancerous conditions such as infection, or breast cyst. Breast Cancer Now have more information about the different breast conditions   on their website.

I am afraid that until you have been seen and checked out no one can say for sure what is the matter. Try not to look too much online as this is likely to cause more anxiety. Try, if you can, to be focused on doing everyday things.

I hope you know more soon and that everything is okay.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards

    Tina
