skin reaction anastrozole

I have been on anastrazole for just about 2 years now.  for the last 5 weeks the itching on my legs and arms together with red rash has driven up the wall and sleepless nights.  I have been sneezing and got runny nose. Went to dr. and was told it was eczema but I have never had eczema not even as a child. Surely eczema wouldn't give a runny nose. My lips are sore and I have to keep using a lip balm. Dr. gave me some cortisone ointment which has calmed the itching but I not convinced it is suddenly eczema.  Could I have developed an allergic reaction to the anastrazole after 2 years. Due to go back to Dr.next week for a follow  up but don't want to question her diagnosis.  Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about the symptoms you are experiencing, and I can appreciate you questioning the eczema diagnosis.

Developing symptoms after two years of taking anastrozole could be a delayed allergic reaction or sensitivity to the medication. Sometimes, if the brand of anastrozole is different from your usual one, then this could cause allergies in some people.

Although true drug allergies usually appear soon after starting a medication, some people do develop reactions much later.

It's good that the cortisone ointment is helping with the itching. I'm not sure if you have eczema especially when you never had it before. But we can't be certain on this.

When you go for your follow up appointment with the GP, it might help to gently mention that you're wondering if anastrozole could be contributing to this. You could ask whether it's worth trying an anti histamine to see if that helps. If the brand of medication has changed, you could ask your GP if you could go back to the original brand and see if that improves your symptoms.

I hope this is of some help. Give us a ring if you would like to talk things over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

  • Thank you for responding Celene. I did mention to Dr. I thought it could be the medication but her reply was that after 2 years this reaction would not occur. I will carry on with the ointment and see if it recurs again then ask for second opinion.  Thank you so much for all your support. X Jan
