People offering medical guidance

Hi , I confirmed with family and friends a few weeks ago that I had been diagnosed with stage 4 renal cancer

Since then I have been inundated with guidance from everyone which includes medical guidance ( totally unqualified) and how the medical profession should be managed. !!

I just wondered if this is a phase and eventually people just ask the simple question..how are you

thank you

  • Hello Drisc1963 and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. I can understand that it can be rather unhelpful when friends and family are trying to give their opinions about your care.

Hopefully as time goes on your friends and family will not give their opinions so readily.

I am sure that it is because they want the best for you. Maybe if you made one of your family members acts as a spokesman and then you could encourage everyone to address any comments through them.

We have some information on our website about advanced kidney cancer which you may find helpful to read.

If you would like to talk to one of the nurses on the helpline then you are welcome to give us a call. the nurses are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm and the number to call is freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Hello Drisci1963, and yes, in my own personal experience of having terminal cancer, this does seem to be the norm.  Relatives, friends and neighbours, with no medical qualifications at all have been telling me of 'miracle cures' and so on and so forth.  One of the most annoying is my neighbour who is always telling me that Green Tea will cure me.  If only it was that easy!  I remain polite and smile and thank them for their concern, but it can be very annoying when suddenly, everyone seems to think that they are an expert on the subject.  I keep reminding  myself that they are only trying to help, and this is what keeps me from totally losing my cool.  Take care, xx

  • Thank you for taking time to reply I am very grateful

I had the green tea one last weekend

    I hope your ok xx

  • You're welcome.  I have good days and bad days.  I wish you all the best on this nightmare cancer journey, xx
