I had a phone call on Saturday morning to say that a sample that I had given was showing high for bowel cancer and that I was going to be referred to the cancer pathway. It would be 2wks. Can someone explain what this means/what to expect please?

Hi DebDM and thank you for your post.
I am sorry to learn that you are having symptoms that are causing you concern.
NHS England has introduced a new target called the Faster Diagnosis Standard (FDS). The target is that you should not wait more than 28 days from referral to find out whether you have cancer or not.
I am assuming you have had a positive FIT test (there is blood in the stool).
Finding blood means that further tests are needed such as a colonoscopy so the doctor can take a closer look at the bowel.
Most patients referred under the Urgent Suspected Cancer Referral system do not have cancer but may have another condition requiring hospital diagnosis and treatment; such as polyps.
I know waiting when you are worried is stressful but hopefully you’ll know more soon.
Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
Kind regards
Tina
