HPV primary yes grade 1

Hi,

I have just had my smear test results back and they say that I have HPV primary yes grade 1. Cervical cytology report negative. Last year I had HPV primary yes grade 2. Cervical cytology report negative.

could you tell me what the difference in grades mean and if I need to worry? I have only been able to find out about the different CIN grades which I think are different to this.

many thanks

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry but i'm afraid I am not sure what the grade refers to in regards to HPV. As you say CIN refers to Cervical Intraepithelial neoplasia which is a type of abnormal cell that can develop in the cervix. However as you have had negative cytology both last year and this year, meaning no abnormal cells you wouldn't have CIN.

HPV is extremely common and usually clears within a couple of years but when found in the cervical screening programme people with it will be monitored to ensure no abnormal cells develop.

They will rescreen you in a years time to see if it has cleared. If at that point it is still there and regardless of the cytology they usually will see people in colposcopy to take a closer look at the cervix.

Try not to worry but if you remain concerned do speak with your own GP or practice nurse about this.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
