Hi can sft's be shrunk with radiotherapy if operating is a dangerous alternative?
Hello and thanks for your enquiry,
I assume that you are referring to a solitary fibrous tumour in the context of a soft tissue sarcoma. Radiotherapy can be used if surgery is not possible. Chemotherapy or other drugs may also be used depending on the stage and type of sarcoma.
There is more information about sarcoma treatments on the Cancer Research UK website
I hope that you get to find out more about this situation soon.
Best wishes,
Vanda
Thankyou....yes I have 2 solitary fibrous tumours in my neck and near mastoid...
I had one removed in 09 that was close to my spine, which resulted in neck fusion and titanium rods....
I had a biopsy 5weeks ago and no results yet,but consultant thinks these 2 are benign same type, but an operation sounds quite dangerous and would mean further restriction to movement...
I wonder if then Radiotherapy could help to shrink them and maybe be monitored instead of an op...... quite scared about it all
Hello Valley1 and thanks for your post,
I can only suggest that you talk to your Consultant once you have got your results back. Let them know about your concerns. You could ask if you could have a second opinion and maybe speak to a doctor who specialises in radiotherapy if your Consultant thought that it was in your best interests.
It is a good idea to try and explore all your options but do be guided by the advice of your doctors.
You are welcome to give us a ring if you would like to talk any of this through.
The number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.
All the best,
Catherine
Thankyou for your reply...in a letter from my last visiti one of the options is to have regular mris to check any further growth of the tumours xx
Hi there and thanks for getting back to us.
It is good to hear that they are just wanting to monitor the tumours for now to make sure nothing is changing. It the tumours remain stable and aren't causing you issues the doctors may prefer to just watch and wait for now, rather than cause you potential side effects from treatment.
Do ask if radiotherapy would be an option with your doctor when you next speak with them.
All the best
Naomi
Thankyou xxx
