Life expectancy.

Hello,

I was diagnosed with MPN  Polycythaemia Vera about 12 years ago.

I have regular check ups (blood test0 to monitor the cancer and take Hydroxicarbamide daily.

Can I ask, do I have a life expectancy due to this cancer? I read 'somewhere' that life expecrancy is about 14 years. Is that correct or just a story?

Many thanks.

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about you having Polycythaemia Vera PV and appreciate you having a question.

The prognosis for people with PV will greatly vary depending on the individuals situation based on general health, severity of PV and if it develops into something more and the overall management of the PV.

For many people PV is well managed and doesn't affect there overall life expectancy but if you remain worried about this do speak with your specialist doctor.

The consultant involved in your care is likely to be able to explain what your diagnosis means for you and what the future may look like.

I hope this helps but you may also like to take a look at the prognosis for PV webpage on bloodcancer.org.uk website.

    Best wishes to you

    Naomi
