Probable melanoma

Hi there

i hade a biopsy excision for a likely melanoma 3 weeks ago in the Bristol area, but hear the wait for results can be upto 8 weeks. I’ve also heard the follow up wide excision and possible sentinel node biopsy can be months away . I’m told it’s likely stage one but am really anxious as it sounds like it could take months to wait for all of the treatment . I had thyroid cancer 9 years ago and all treatment including 2 operations took only 3 months. I’m finding the huge time frame causes great anxiety and also if it has spread, then surely 8 weeks til results and a possible 4 months wait for the next step will be a dangerously long wait ?

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about what you are going through right now. This must be an incredibly difficult time and it's understandable that you are feeling worried waiting for things to happen.

Cancer waiting targets are a guideline only and unfortunately, many hospitals are struggling to meet them due to staff shortages and the impact of winter pressures on the NHS. As a result patients are experiencing delays getting the tests and treatment that is needed. If you have not yet done so, it may be helpful to contact the hospital's Patient Advisory Liaison Service ( PALS))  to express your concerns.

Many people with cancer worry that it will spread while they are waiting, but we do know that most cancers grow slowly, so waiting a few weeks does not normally affect how well treatment works.  However, waiting any length of time when you are worried is stressful.

I hope you know more soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,
