Driving

I have lung cancer and am told it has metastasied to 2 small spots in the brain.  I may be given radiotherapy but do not know yet. Can I drive legally in the meantime please?

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your situation. This must be a difficult time for you.

The DVLA states that you must tell them if you have a brain tumour or that your cancer has spread to your brain. This is because these conditions can sometimes affect you having seizures or affect things like your vision, coordination or ability to concentrate which are important for safe driving. You can read more about driving and brain tumours on our website.

Once you let the DVLA know, they will assess your situation by getting medical information from your specialist team about how your condition affects you. They will then decide whether you can keep your license or if it needs to be temporarily suspended. If they say you can't drive for now, they will usually tell you when you can reapply.

I know that this must feel frustrating, but it's about keeping you and other's safe. Your specialist team should be able to guide you on whether it is safe for you to drive while you wait for a decision.

I hope this reply helps a little. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
