Melanoma removal

My adult son has had a suspected melanoma removed by WLE.  No medical professional has checked him over for any other suspicious moles.  Is this normal?

Also, as the decision was to do the WLE immediately, from people’s personal experience, can you say whether this means it is more likely to be confirmed as a melanoma than come back as benign? There is a 4 - 8 week wait on biopsy results and the wait is difficult for him and I am not sure whether I am holding on to false hope that this is not skin cancer.

  • Hello and Elzmum and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to learn of your son's situation, this must be a difficult time for you all.

It can be a stressful and anxious time waiting for test results.

Not being involved in your son's care we cannot explain why an excision biopsy was done. This is something only your son's doctors can say, as they know his situation. However, it is only when the cells that have been removed are looked at closely under a microscope that a definite diagnosis can be given.

I realise this is hard, but at the moment all you can do is wait until your son hears back from the hospital, until then no one can say what the outcome of the results will be.

It might be once the results are known your son will have any further moles checked, again this is something he can check with the doctors at his next appointment.

I do hope your son does not have to wait too long. If you would like to talk anything through with our nurses on the helpline, we are available 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday and the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040,

    Jemma

  • Thank you for your reply Jemma.  By coincidence his GP has since contacted him to book an appointment for a full body check as the nurse who removed his stitches noted he has a number of other moles which should be checked.  Also heard that a friend of a friend had their results back within 5 weeks so hoping he will not have much longer to wait.
