Fit test

Hi, I have recieved my fit test results back, it is 400.  Should I have my colonoscopy in the next 2 weeks? I'm panicking i have rectovaginal endometriosis, where by rectum and sigmoid are affected.  Last time I had a colonoscopy I was in agony.  Can they put me under? The sedation/gas air did nothing last time.  I'm so worried, iv googled it's such a high result.

  • Hi Carla-H and thank you for posting,

Anyone with a FIT result above 10 is referred to the hospital regardless of how high the result is, and often a colonoscopy is offered.

If you are invited to go straight to test to have a colonoscopy you can ask to see if you can speak to a doctor first about your concerns. It might be they will be able to give you a stronger sedation. In rare situations, they can do a colonoscopy under a general anaesthetic but there are risks with having an anaesthetic and it can take a while to arrange. There may be other options they can do such as a scan especially if your last colonoscopy was recent.

Although your FIT is high it does not mean it is cancer or that you are at a higher risk of having cancer. The important thing is that blood has been found and this needs to be looked into. There could be several reasons for your FIT result such as haemorrhoids, or polyps. If the FIT was done near or during your period this can also give a positive reading.

Easier said than done, try not to overthink things and if you can stay away from looking on the internet about this, as the information you read isn't talking about your situation but it can heighten anxiety.

I hope you get to speak to someone soon and this reply helps in some way.

    Take care,

    Jemma

  • Thanks Jemma.  Iv seen my gp, having lots of bloods, 2 further stool tests and camera....I'm not going to Google x

  • Hi, due to my score of 400, do you think I will get my colonscopy within 2 weeks? Im on the 2 week pathway x

  • Hi Dolphin123 and thank you for your post,

Anyone with a FIT over 10 will be referred to the hospital for tests to check the bowel and it is usually for a colonoscopy. As you are on the two-week wait this will hopefully be within the next couple of weeks depending on the hospital.

You may be offered an appointment to go straight to colonoscopy or you may see a doctor first.

I hope you get to know more soon. If you would like to talk things through with one of our nurses on the helpline we are available between 9 am and 5pm Monday to Friday and the freephone number is 0808 800 4040,

    Take care,

    Jemma
