  • Hello and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn of your situation this must be difficult.

Everyone is discussed at MDT (multidisciplinary meeting) and looked at individually, and the doctors will weigh the benefits of treatment against any possible side effects. Add-on treatment (adjuvant) after surgery is given if there is a high risk the cancer may return and the benefits of treatment such as chemotherapy outweigh the side effects.

However, if the risk of the cancer coming back is low and they are confident they have removed the cancer, the doctors may not offer further treatment if it is thought there will be little benefit.

Most people will have follow-up appointments which will include regular blood tests and scans but how this will look may vary from hospital to hospital. The link I have provided gives more information.

I wondered if you have a specialist nurse (CNS) who knows your situation and can talk things through with you about the decision not to give you further treatment and what the follow-up plan is. Or if it might be possible to speak with your consultant's secretary to see if you can speak with them again. Some people may also find it helpful to get a second opinion as this can help clarify a situation. This is something your consultant or GP can arrange for you.

I hope this reply helps in some way, if you would like to talk things through with one of the nurses on the helpline we are available between 9 am and 5 pm Monday to Friday and the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040.

    Take care,

    Jemma
