Secondary breast assessment.

I’m 54 and just had second mammogram and once again asked to come for second assessment . Last time after ultrasound nothing bad was found but more worried this time as only 4 percent of women recalled and this is my second time.

  • It is undoubtedly a concerning time for you but I'm sure you know that most recalls do not result in a cancer diagnosis.  It's the not knowing and waiting for results  has been the worst part of the process for mebso I sympathise

Worse case scenario, there ils a cancer diagnosis at the end of it for yot know thatmy experience of cancer has not been as bad as my darkest fears....It's been really tough at times but there have also been times that haven't been as bad . It's amazing what we can cope with as human beings!! And some of the horror stories about  cancer treatment eg chemo sickness haven't come true for me -;yet!

    All the best

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am sorry you are concerned about a call back on your second mammogram.

As you may have read it isn't unusual to get a recall, but of the small percentage that do, an even smaller percentage end up with a cancer diagnosis.

I appreciate that as you were called back with your first mammogram you may feel worried that this has happened to you again, but some breast tissues are just slightly trickier to read than others. This can be for many reasons but breast density, scarring, cysts, or calcifications are some examples.

The specialist reviewing your mammogram will always want to ensure that they know what they are seeing and check for the slightest change or an area that hasn't given a clearer picture as hoped for.

    Take care,

    Sarah.
