Lumps in neck and below collarbone

Hi,

around 3 weeks ago I noticed a lump in my neck so I went to GP to have it looked at. The doctor said it was fine and sent me on my way. Fast forward a few days I went back to the doctor as I was still super worried and he prescribed me anti anxiety medication and said it was all health anxiety and that the lump is just a lymph node which will go down soon.
Fast forward 2 weeks, I have found 3 more lumps. All are below my collarbone, one on left and two on the right.
I have rung the GP today and when the receptionist answered she let me know that the doctor I saw last time has requested I only see him and that I am not to have an appointment before the 27th march. I know this is because he thinks I am suffering from health anxiety, but the new lumps are really worrying me.
What can I do? Is this likely to be nothing? How can I push him to listen to me.

  • Hello Nalaacey and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn that you are experiencing symptoms that are causing you concern.

The doctors do have guidelines for when they should refer urgently to the hospital for any tests to rule out cancer.

We cannot say what is causing the lumps but it is possible to have raised lymph nodes for other reasons not necessarily cancer.

If the lumps are still there when you next have your appointment it is worth asking the GP if you may need to have any further tests and what is it they think could be the cause of the lumps.

I realise it feels like it is a long time before your appointment, but this will give the GP time to see if there are any further changes and if things improve.

In the meantime, if you are worrying a lot, it may be helpful to contact Anxiety UK or MIND for support and tips on how to manage this. If you do become unwell or feel further lumps do try the GP again to see if it is possible to bring your appointment forward.

I am sorry I cannot be more helpful on this occasion but I hope you can get some reassurance soon.

    Take care,

    Jemma
