Thickened womb lining

Hi all. I don't even know where to start, can't quite believe iv found myself on this path again. I was diagnosed with BC back in Nov 2021 had chemo and mastectomy etc and was put on zoladex injections for 19months, finished them a year ago and have been on tamoxifen ever since. Iv not had periods since starting chemo as that stopped them and then obviously the zoladex kept them at bay. 3 weeks ago I had a slight bleed, it was minor and was gone as quick as it came. Went to drs and got referred on 2ww. Had an vaginal ultrasound and have been for the results today. They said scan shows extremely thick lining 20mm!!!! And tht i have cysts on my ovaries (he said the 2 things are not connected) I have to go back next week for a biopsy and a camera to look closer at the womb. I am absolutely terrified beyond words. That lining seems so thick and I can't think of anything but the worst. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated xxx

  • Hi my daughter has the same from not haveing  regular periods in months it a build up on the lineing they call hyperplasia.  20mm is a lot.  Her is 11mm She was told it a hormone imbalance and can be a sign of pre cancer cells they  also they gave her tablets to make her bleed so she could shead the lineing of the womb. She is 4 weeks bleeding now and passing huge clots they have reasured her this part is OK it's the build up comming away. Gave her pain relief and a ultrasound and progesterone tablets to take. Amd will.do follow up review. She also had cyst on her overie  and was told she has pcos. Hope for you its not pre  cancer cells and  they give you something to make you bleed you didn't mention you age

  • Hello LooseyM and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. I can understand how unsettling it can be waiting for tests and then results.

Unfortunately until you have had the biopsy and the doctors have had a chance to look at the womb no one can really tell you any more. You can read more about a thickened womb or endometrial hyperplasia on the information written by RCOG (Royal College of Gynaecologists).

There is also more information about a thickened womb in a leaflet on the Womans health website.

Ovarian cysts are very common and as your doctor said are probably not related.

Try if you can to keep an open mind. It can help to read through the various links so you can see what the doctors will be looking for.

Do ask the doctors any questions particularly if you need a greater understanding of what they are saying to you.

You are welcome to ring and chat through any of this with one of the helpline nurses. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine
