Efudix Shortage

I was told on Tuesday after waiting nearly 6 mths to see the dermatologist that the weird mark in my leg was in fact a basal cell carcinoma and prescribed Efudix to treat it. It’s not life threatening but all the same I’d rather start the treatment ASAP and avoid complications. I’ve tried local pharmacies including the hospital and a private pharmacy but all say the same, there is a shortage and a problem with supplies from the manufacturer. I can see from other posts that this has been going on for some time and I’m wondering what others in my situation have done? Should I go back to the GP to ask for the BCC to be cut out? I’m worried it will get worse and more serious if I leave it too long.

  • Hi Ann2025 and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to read about your situation and the challenges you are experiencing obtaining your prescription.

Although a Basal Cell Carcinoma is generally not life-threatening, I understand your desire to start treatment sooner rather than later, especially after waiting six months to see a specialist.

Has the pharmacy provided any timeframe for when they can fulfill your prescription?

Are you able to speak to the dermatologist to see if there is an alternative cream that is available.

You can consult your GP to request surgical removal if possible, but your prescription may be fulfilled sooner than your appointment for surgery.

I hope you get this sorted soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards
