Lump on son (13) neck

Hi,

My son has had a lump on his neck for over 12 months. We saw the GP last February and he arranged an ultrasound in April 2024. A few weeks later I received a call from the GP advising that it was a sebaceous cyst and that they would refer us to dermatology to have it removed. Fast forward 10 months for our appointment with dermatology… we saw them on Tuesday and the consultant advised that it isn’t a sebaceous cyst, she had no idea what it is. She said that it had some vascularity and that she didn’t think it was a lymph node either. She did say she didn’t think it was anything sinister but I’m left wondering if they don’t know what it is how can they say it’s not sinister?
she asked if we would like it removed and to be referred to ENT.
I queried whether it was likely to grow to which she did not know the answer not knowing what it actually is. Am I wrong for worrying? My son is only 13 and suffers with daytime sweating too (no night sweats) .

  • I also should add that the lump is firm, the consultant was very surprised by this.

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear your son has this lump alongside some sweats that are concerning you.

Unfortunately no one here can say what this lump may be and I suggest you go back and discuss the next steps with your sons GP. You can discuss your worries with them and also what further referrals he may need to get more clarity about what this lump may be.

Lumps can have many causes and the majority will be harmless but it is important that anything more serious is ruled out, just to be on the safe side.

I hope you know more soon and can get some peace of mind about this.

    All the best

    Naomi

  • Thank you for your reply, I understand that no one would be able to give medical advice. I was just concerned that I was being over cautious insisting that they look at it further. I know the NHS are so busy and I don’t want to waste anyone’s time.
