Radiotherapy side effects

Hello there , i am 73 and have a BCC on the tip of my nose and have been told i need a second excision to go deeper to the cartilage this time. The surgeon will perform a forehead flap surgery and is hopeful for a god cosmetic result.
My second option is to have radiotherapy instead. He seemed to think the side effect of skin changes would only come 20+ years after radiotherapy but on many online forums (including this one) there are patients who have had permanent discolouration only months after the treatment. Can you confirm this is likely to happen ?
The prospect of further surgery is daunting but i would like a good cosmetic finish.
thank you for your help!

  • Hello and thanks for your enquiry,

Unfortunately, it isn't possible to give you a clear answer. Every patient is different, and recovery and long term effects will vary due to various factors, such as age and skin type, and other medical conditions such as diabetes. Skin changes can occur afterwards, both with surgery and radiotherapy. How long this takes to happen will also vary patient to patient.

Generally radiotherapy long term side effects would take longer to emerge. Do discuss this further with your doctor if you have concerns.

I hope that it goes well, whatever treatment option you decide on.

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
