Smear test results - I don’t understand

Hi

I have just had my smear test results posted on my health records and they say the following:

HPV PRIMARY yes

GRADE             X

CERVICAL CYTOLOGY REPORT HPV test only. No reflex cytology undertaken

HPV TEST High risk HPV not detected

MANAGEMENT SUGGESTED Normal recall

ACTION CODE Routine recall

Does this mean that I have HPV but it’s not high risk or is the ‘HPV Primary - yes’ refer to what the test is for? Slightly stressing me….

thanks

  • Hello Ellie1234,

I believe your results show that you were tested for HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) and the results were negative. When the pap test is negative for HPV the pathologist does not go on to test the cells as it is the HPV that is responsible for causing changes in the cells.

As the result was negative to HPV you will be called back again in three years time.

You can read more about the screening results on the NHS website.

If you would like to go through any of this with one of the nurses on the helpline you are welcome to give us a ring.

The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the line is open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
