In despair

My dad is now in his 4th hospital stay to stop the bladder cancer, that he has had for 12 years, from bleeding. He is otherwise a fit, mobile, independent 91 year old who is usually mistaken for 70. I don't know what to do. He gets a scrape and a few days later it is bleeding again. Bright red oxygenated looking blood. He has had 5 transfusions since 3rd dec. On loads of irrigation. He was meant to have been done again this morning but no, he was left. Are they hoping that he will die?

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your dad's situation. I appreciate that this is a difficult time for you both.

It is difficult for us to be specific why your dad didn't have his irrigation procedure as we are not involved in his clinical care. His healthcare team are better placed to advise you on this as they are familiar with all your dad's medical details. Sometimes delays happen because of emergencies elsewhere, or the patient is not well enough on the day to have the procedure.

You may find it helpful to speak to your dad's specialist team and hopefully they will be able to provide some clarity on his current situation. Doctors are usually happy to speak to relatives provided they have the patients consent.

I hope you know more soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
