Feeling worried

I have recently had a colposopy following 3 positive smears HPV virus. I had a biopsy which has shown grade 1 . I had grade 3 , 15 years ago and had treatment  does this mean it has come back and what will the treatment  be .

I also suffer with alot of thrush and  UTIs especially after sex is this linked ?

  • Hi Kate79 and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn of your situation.

It is possible to get HPV twice as it is possible to get a second type of HPV. It is also possible for HPV to lie dormant for many years and reappear. As you may know, abnormal cells that are found are known as cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN).

CIN 1 are low-grade changes which means one-third of the cervix has been affected. Often these cells will return to normal without treatment, and so you will be invited to have another cervical screening test in 12 months to check whether you still have HPV. If you are still HPV positive and found to still have CIN1 then treatment may be offered.

HPV and abnormal cells do not cause any symptoms so it is unlikely the thrush and UTIs you are having are being caused by this.
