Worried he may die before he has a chance of treatment

I'm worried my brother may die before he gets treated for lung cancer. (metastic melanoma diagnosed by lung specialist) He has not even been in front of oncology yet (10 days time) but cannot eat much, is sick, can hardly move and is having his lungs drained every few days.

Sick with worry. Is it possible to be this sick before treatment?

  • Hello KarenKaren and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn about your brother's situation this must be very difficult for you all.

I can appreciate this is a worrying time for you seeing how unwell your brother is at the moment. The oncologist will be able to give more information once they assess your brother. Unfortunately, it is difficult for us to comment without being involved in his care.

When planning treatment the doctors will look at several things such as how far the cancer has spread, how fit a person is generally, and whether or not they have any other health conditions. Everyone is treated individually and the doctors will weigh possible side effects of treatment against possible benefits.

I realise that 10 days is a long time to wait in this situation and there is a lot of uncertainty.

If you would like to talk things through with one of the nurses on the helpline, you would be welcome to give us a call. We are available between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday and the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040.

    Take care,

    Jemma
