Tamoxifen vs ovarian removal

I am just recovering from a lumpectomy with an isolated stage 1 breast cancer(progesterone& Oestrogen +ve)

At 49 I have been told I am likely to need to take tamoxifen. My family is complete and I really don’t want my periods to restart when I have my mariva coil removed. Is ovary ablation or removal a drug free alternative to tamoxifen?

  • Hello and thank you for posting,

Unfortunately, we are unable to give a medical opinion, and we would encourage you to discuss this with the team who are treating you.

However, I am aware that ovarian suppression can include removal or ablation of the ovaries. I am not sure if this would mean you are treated entirely drug-free as everyone's situation is individual and your doctors will suggest what treatment would give you the best outcome. But it may mean a reduction in certain therapies.

Do read our page on hormone therapy which discusses ovarian suppression lower down the page and this is from the charity Breast Cancer Now.

Take care and if you want to talk things through with a nurse on the helpline then call 0808 800 4040. Lines are open mon-fri 9-5.

    Sarah.
