  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your situation.

People vary in the amount of radiotherapy sessions they need. But 20 radiotherapy sessions is actually quite common for prostate cancer. The number of sessions given depends on several things including the type of radiotherapy you're having, your overall health and your specific circumstances. Some people will have a higher number of lower dose treatment while others will have fewer sessions with a slightly higher dose each time.

Because your cancer is locally advanced, your doctors have likely chosen a treatment plan that balances effectiveness with minimising side effects. The hormone treatment is also an important part of the treatment, helping to shrink the cancer and make the radiotherapy more effective.

If you're still feeling worried, the best thing for you to do is to get your specialist team to explain the treatment plan they have recommended for you as they are familiar with all your medical details. If you have a specialist nurse (CNS) involved in your care then perhaps they can provide you with further information. You often have to call and leave them a message and they will get back to you.

I hope this is of some use. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
