Scared epigastric pain

I know this can't diagnose me but I'm feeling very scared right now.

I'm 37, I have had epigastric pain since November. Some days are worse than others. At first I thought it was muscle pain so I didn't get it checked until January. The best was to describe it, it feels bruised when you touch it or upon some movement. I also have hiccups and burping more.

I was put on PPIs for a month and it hasn't worked. Went back to the GP yesterday and he took my bloods. Results came back today and everything is fine except my iron levels are very low. I can't see the GP until March now.

I asked yesterday if he thought it could something sinister and he said unlikely because my appetite isn't low. I do eat a lot. He thinks it's just non-ulcer dyspepsia which isn't a stomach ulcer but pain that can't be diagnosed? I have suffered IBS for years.

I have since read the connection between stomach cancer and low iron and it scares me. I have three young children and the thought of leaving them while they are young terrifies me.

I had a fit test In September and that came back normal.

Do these symptoms sound like cancer could be likely?  I can't see anyone else that's had the same symptoms as me.

Thank you for taking the time to read.

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about the worry you have.

It might be reassuring to know that the symptoms of cancer are the same symptoms that cause non-cancerous health problems. Also, no test you have had, so far, has come back with worrying results. Low levels of iron are common particularly in women who have periods if they have monthly bleeds and not getting enough iron from food.

You have a GP appointment coming up so do talk about your blood result and the pain you have. There may be something the GP could prescribe that could help to make the anaemia (low iron) and pain better.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,
