Pharyngeal cancer

4 months after Radiotherapy my husband still cannot swallow properly and has continuousl ear pain due to an Ulcer on Pharynx. He has not been offered any treatment for this. Surely there is something, either Steroid or Antibiotics? It’s not getting any better. surgeon says it will heal in time ?

  • Hello and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn about the symptoms your husband is experiencing at this time, this must be very difficult.

It can take some time for things to heal fully after radiotherapy. However, if things aren't improving it might be worth speaking with his nurse specialist (if he has one) about the pain and discomfort he is in. They could also talk to the surgeon again on his behalf to see what they would recommend or your husband could try contacting the surgeon directly through their secretary.

It might also be worth speaking with his GP as they may be able to prescribe something or speak with the hospital team on his behalf.

I wondered if your husband had input from a speech and language therapist (SLT) and or dietician if he can contact them for advice and exercises to help improve his swallowing.

I hope this helps a little and your husband's symptoms start to improve soon.

If you would like to speak with one of our nurses on the helpline we are available between 9 am and 5 pm Monday to Friday and the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040,

    Kind regards,

    Jemma
