Itchy skin after radiotherapy

Hi

I have what I can only describe as a Prickly Heat rash that is horrendously itchy on my chest area mainly but also feels like it's creeping up one side of my neck. I completed my radiotherapy treatment for breast cancer 10 days ago and although very little side effects during treatment, my skin appears to have become very irritated over the last 3 days but not directly on the treated area.. skin seems irritated away from the area. Is this normal.. when will it ease? Thank you in advance

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about the rash that you are experiencing.

We do have some information on our website about skin reactions after radiotherapy.

It is an expected side effect and should settle down after 2-4 weeks. I would let the radiotherapy department know as they may have some advice on what you can apply to the area. The radiologists may also want to see the affected area.

Your skin will be sensitive for quite sometime. Try to avoid soap and you may find that you need a very gentle washing powder.

You may find it helpful to look at this thread on the Breast Cancer Now forum which has some tips on other women's experiences. You could also start another thread on this forum (as you are on 'ask the nurses') to hear from others who have had radiotherapy.

Wear loose cotton clothing and dry your skin very gently after a shower. You could also make an appointment to see your GP to see if they can give you any medication to help with some of the symptoms that you are experiencing.

I do hope that your skin settles down soon as I can imagine it must be quite uncomfortable.

If you would like to ring and chat this through with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are welcome to do so.

The number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
