Stage 4 kidney cancer - treatment being offered could cause extreme fatigue. How would this affect my exercise regime?

Hi , I have just been diagnosed with secondary/ stage 4 kidney cancer which is currently low level

my oncologist has stated that I could start treatment now or wait as I am being monitored every 3 months

the treatment is a combination of Nivolumab once a month for two years and Cabozantinib every day tablet

I have noticed one of the side effects is extreme fatigue

So my question is …

I go to the gym most days and really enjoy my exercise and wondering would extreme fatigue effect this

  • Hi Drisc1963 and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn of your situation, this must be difficult.

It is difficult to know how the side effects may affect you because everyone is different and will respond differently. Unfortunately, until you start taking the tablets no one can say how they will affect you with certainty.

It is great that you are so active and this will hold you in good stead. Many people who have cancer treatments are still able to remain active. If you do decide to take the tablets you may find it is a bit of trial and error or there may be a pattern where certain times of the day, you have more energy and that might be the time to go to the gym.

I appreciate it is difficult when you are living with the uncertainty of how you might be on the treatment, but I hope this helps in some way.

Please do call us if you would like to speak with one of our nurses. The freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040 and we are available between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes
