Mole removed 12 years ago now itchy

Hi

I had a mole removed by laser in April 2013  from the side/crease of my nose for cosmetic reasons and at the time I stupidly choose not to have it tested as it was extra money that I couldn't afford.

About 18 months ago I noticed it had developed a lot of spider veins coming from the area but more recently in the last 6 months or so it itches and is sometimes painful (even though I take daily painkillers for a genetic condition)..I've been to the Drs twice but they dismiss my concerns,  saying there would be something visible if anything untoward. There is a small white coloured part where the mole was but this could be scar tissue.

Should I insist on a dermatology referral?  Incidentally,  I do have a history of basel cell carcinoma which developed on a scalp birthmark.

TIA

  • Hello Cassie70 and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn that you are experiencing symptoms that are causing you concern.

It sounds like you are worried about melanoma. The doctors have guidelines on when to refer someone urgently if there is a concern they may have cancer. It sounds like your GP is not concerned about the itchiness you have. You may find it helpful to look at the referral guidelines for melanoma on our website

I wondered if the GP was aware that you are worried you may have cancer or if they have explained what the cause of the itchiness might be and if they could prescribe any medication or suggest any skin cream that might help. It might be worth having another chat with them or perhaps seeing if it is possible to speak with another GP.

Otherwise, the only other way to speak with a dermatologist might be to have an appointment privately ( if you are in a position to) which you can arrange without going through the GP.

I hope this reply helps in some way,

    Take care,

    Jemma
