HPV positive with normal cells but have symptoms

Hi,

I’ve had HPV for 2 years but with normal cells. my last smear was in October 24. In the last couple of months I’ve started experiencing pain during sex, spotting and period pain cramps aswell as back ache. I saw the doctor and they have swabbed and tested for STIs and bacterial, and all come back clear. When dr swabbed she said my cervix was red and I had a lot of dark blood on the swabs. I’ve also had an ultrasound for polyps, endo, and fibroids, that has all come back normal too. My doctor is now saying I need to make a routine appointment to discuss my symptoms? I’m feeling frustrated and confused why I’m not being tested for cancer as a matter of urgency. The next routine appointment is 3 weeks away, and that’s just to go back to see the gp.

Can someone advise what you think the next steps would be please? Would you think this would be urgent referral?

Thanks

  • Hi Sammie10 and thank you for your posting,

I am sorry to learn you are having symptoms that are causing you concern.

You may have mentioned this to your GP, I wondered if they are aware that you are worried about cancer.

The GP may not be concerned about cancer as your recent smear in October was clear, and your ultrasound was normal. However, the best person to discuss this would be your GP as they know your situation.

It is important to know that there may be other more common causes for the cervix to be like it is for example cervical ectropion.

I hope this helps a little, if you would like to talk things through with the nurses on the helpline, the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040 and we are available between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Jemma
