Chest X-ray, lung ct scan now TB test

My brother in law has had quite a few symptoms of lung trouble for a few months now, had a chest X-ray where they saw a mass, so sent him for a lung ct scan urgent, he had the scan yesterday and they’ve called today saying he needs to have a TB phlegm test today, do you think they are ruling out TB or they think he may have TB as the 2 are closely connected in terms of symptoms

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry your brother-in-law is currently under investigation for his lung symptoms and I realise this is an uncertain time for you all as a family.

It sounds like your brother-in-law's doctors are being thorough and checking for possible causes of the lung mass they saw on the chest x-ray and CT scan.

Tuberculosis ( TB ) can sometimes present with lung symptoms and even appear as a mass on scans, so they want to rule it out as a possibility. This doesn't definitely mean he has TB just that they need to test for it to be sure.

It's very common to overthink things when waiting for results. I know it's easier said than done but try and take it one step at a time until you know more.

I hope this has been of some help. Give us a ring if you would like to talk things over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,
