Menstrual Cycle

Hi, I’m hoping anyone can put my mind at ease. I’ve been under a rheumatologist over the last 3 years for possible autoimmune issues - nothing yet diagnosed.
Im 44 and over the last few months I have missed the odd period and then have a couple of light short periods and now I’ve been spotting (some days heavier) for 4 weeks now.

I raised it with my GP in general as my other symptoms are ongoing and nothing further was done - been referred to a different rheumatologist for second opinion.

Could my cycle be my age, or to do with my autoimmune issues?? Any suggestions welcome

  • i have had loads of blood tests for autoimmune stuff, all FBC ok etc just postive for SMA / ANA and low vit D and high cholesterol if that helps?

  • Hello SarahMit and thanks for your post,

I feel that it is only your GP or possibly your rheumatologist who can help get to the bottom of why you are experiencing spotting. They are involved in your medical care and can arrange further tests if they feel they may be necessary.

There can be any number of reasons why you are having a change in periods including your autoimmune condition.

You might find it helpful to look at the information on irregular periods written by the NHS.

I would discuss this with the rheumatologist that you are seeing and then if necessary go back and discuss this with your GP.

A menstrual cycle can be very sensitive to changes in our body so this may well be the case with you.

I hope you know more soon.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Thank you, you have put my mind at ease. I was thinking this might be the direction to go. My only issue is I’m not seeing the rheumatologist until April but at least it’s in sight! X
