fever in advanced melanoma

Hi, I'm a carer for my husband who has advanced melanoma stage 4 with abdominal metastases, no mets outside his abdomen on the previous scan in December. For about the last 6 weeks He gets a high temperature and coughing and vomiting approximately every 6-7 days for 1 day but is reasonably well with no fever, cough or vomiting in the intervening days. I wondered if this pattern is usual for advanced melanoma? We seem to have a bit of a difference of opinion amongst the specialists with one suggesting a scan to look for infection and the other saying this intermittent fever is probably cancer related. I wonder if in your experience this just indicates cancer progression or should we be looking for other causes such as infection? Thanks.

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

Fever episodes and flu like symptoms can be observed in advanced melanoma. This can occur more if the liver is involved. The exact way as to how and why this happens isn't entirely clear.

If there is a developing pattern to these episodes, then it would be managed conservatively probably without intervention. It is a difficult one, and equally doctors tend to not want to miss an infection that could be treated. I'm guessing that may be keeping a diary with specific details about these episodes may help.

Getting a bit more of a medical steer about them would also help. For example, what other symptoms to look out for, whether the fever episode changes one time or feels different. That is the time to seek advice.

I hope that this helps some,

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
