Oral Cancer

I am really worried about oral cancer. I have been getting a burning tongue on the left side and the dentist has referred me for possible Burning Mouth Syndrome but it will be a few months.

However I have recently had a feeling that something is on my gum, upper left at the very back just past my upper molars. I could feel something with my finger like a small spot and I picked it off but it came back after about a week.
I am also getting jaw pain that side and front of neck pain again same side but I do suffer from TMJ so thought that was the reason.

Now I am thinking the worst.  If the spot was cancer could I pick it off and if so would it come back that quick?

I am a 64 year old women, never smoked and no alcohol at all for the last two years. Before that I would just have wine with dinner at night.

Can anyone help?

  • Hello and thanks for your enquiry,

Unfortunately, as nurses, we can't give you a medical opinion on this. The expertise for this does lie with your dentist. Maybe ask them to examine you again as they can take a look at your mouth closely and advise. It is likely to be something other than cancer, as we can develop mouth ulcers and infections quite quickly.

I hope that you get help with this soon,

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
