Abiraterone - when will it funded by the NHS for prostate cancer?

Does any one have any information on when Abiraterone is likely to be funded by the NHS for locally advanced prostate cancer? Thanks.

  • Hello Bobbydiver and thanks for posting

I'm afraid Abiraterone is only available in the NHS for first-line treatment for men with localised advanced prostate cancer in Scotland and Wales. It is not approved by NICE to be given in England and Northern Ireland. NICE guidance is reviewed from time to time and if new evidence emerges, it may lead to changes in recommendations. Unfortunately, we cannot say if and when this may happen.

I presume you might have done this already, but if not, it might be worth speaking to your prostate specialist or specialist nurse (CNS) as they know your situation and may be able to offer you advice. We do have information on our website about ways to access treatment on the NHS that may be helpful to read.

I hope this is of some help. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
