Cachexia (wasting syndrome) Advice

For someone who is already underweight and eating a very healthy diet, but low appetite, what advice can you give on reversing Cachexia (wasting syndrome). Can anyone direct me to research, case studies or personal advice on how to be successful.

  • Hello and thanks for your enquiry,

I can appreciate that this is a difficult situation. Unfortunately, we are not able to help you specifically with this.

Cachexia is complex, and relatively poorly researched. It can be related to direct activity on the body's metabolism from a cancer, or due to a low appetite, or both factors.

Ideally, you need to consult with a registered dietician or nutritionist for strategies that may help. Sometimes oral steroids can help stimulate appetite, but this has to be done carefully under medical supervision. Cancer specialists or palliative care specialists would be familiar with prescribing low dose steroids for this situation.

I hope you are able to source help near you,

    Kind regards,

    Vanda
