Breast reconstruction

Hi. I had a tug breast reconstruction just over 8 weeks ago.

I woke this morning and my reconstructed breast feels swollen and painful underneath near my ribs and around the underside of thebreast. There isn't any redness or anything visually obvious but it wasn't this painful before now.  I think i may have slept on my side last night, so maybe that caused it. Is it possible to get a build up of fluid this long afterwards?

Many thanks.

  • Hi Sunshine and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear you have had recent breast surgery.

It is difficult for me to tell you that everything is normal as I am not directly involved in your care and I cannot make an assessment. But as a very general rule, what you describe does not sound overly worrying. You may like to read the potential after effects  of breast cancer surgery on the Breast Cancer Now website.

After surgery the body may produce extra fluid ( lymph fluid) as it heals in order to protect the area. This is called a seroma. It can still be possible to develop a seroma several weeks after surgery especially if several lymph nodes were removed.

Having said this, I think that it would be a good idea to have this checked when you can. If you have not spoken to your BCN (Breast Care Nurse) recently then do give them a ring to let them know your symptoms.

You may find it helpful to connect with other women who have been through breast cancer surgery as it can sometimes help share experiences.

Breast Cancer Now can put you in touch with other women in a service called 'someone like me'.

I hope this information is useful
