Essential thrombocythemia

My step mum has been diagnosed with this blood cancer, I don’t want to ask too many questions for fear of upsetting her & when I google it it is a minefield of information & I don’t know what to believe.. I don’t want  to ask too many questions as I think she is still trying to process it.. any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated…

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your step mum having Essential Thrombocythaemia ET and can appreciate you having questions.

I think it would be a good idea to have another chat with her when you can to understand what the doctors have told her about how this affects her.

ET is classed as a form of blood cancer but it behaves more like a chronic condition and often people living with it are well and don't always need treatment. Patients are usually monitored with blood tests as well as by their symptoms to guide the best treatment and management of this condition.

    I hope this helps

    Take care

    Naomi
