Possible Bowel Cancer in parent with dementia

My dad is in a care home with mixed dementia. I had a phone call 2 weeks ago from them saying that his stool sample had blood in it and that he couldn't have any further tests as he's too weak (with other issues) but that he now had bowel cancer. I have been waiting for the Doctor to call me, as I cannot understand how you can diagnose cancer without further tests? Surely, blood in his stools could be from a variety of things?

I'm not in denial if he has cancer, then he has cancer. There's nothing I can do and he wont be able to have treatment. But I've been through very similar with him over the last year on many occasions and then told something completely different later down the line.

I hope this makes sense? I just wondered if they can diagnose cancer just from a stool sample?

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your dad, it sounds like it is a difficult time for you and it is understandable you having questions about what has happened.

As I am sure you are aware usually several different tests are needed to diagnose cancer and with bowel cancer further tests following blood in stools are carried out. There are instances when someone is too frail for further tests ( or treatment) such as an invasive colonoscopy and alternatives need to be explored or a plan of what does or doesn't need to happen next.

It sounds like you need to speak with your dad's GP to make sense of what is going on and the plan moving forward.

I am sorry no one here can be of more help on this occasion.

Please get back in touch if you have more questions but do speak to the GP when you can.

    All the best

    Naomi
