Socialising during Chemo

I am going through Chemo and have my 4th session tomorrow. My wife will not go out and mix with friends as she is scared of fetching infection back with her. The friends know her situation and know the risks but she is still scared. Should we be totally isolating during this time?

  • Total isolation is impossible, and now is a high risk time, but life closest to normal may help (I have had two infections under chemotherapy including covid, they pushed chemotherapy back but I am still on it)

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you are going through chemotherapy. I can understand your wife's concern in wanting to protect you but it is also important that your wife is able to get support from her friends.

Without being involved in your care and knowing what cancer you have and how your blood counts have been affected by the chemo you may find it helpful to get the reassurance from the doctors and nurses looking after you to give their opinion. This may help your wife have more reassurance about seeing friends whilst you continue with your treatment.

It is important that your wives friends stay away if they have any infections.

We have some information on our website about a social life whilst having chemo which may also help encourage your wife to see her friends.

    I do hope this helps.

If you or your wife would like to talk any of this through with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a call.

Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
