Whipple surgery

Is it worth it? How likely will the cancer return?

What is the prognosis with and without the surgery?

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am sorry that you or someone you know is going through this, cancer and its treatment decisions can often bring up lots of questions.

Unfortunately, as nurses, we cannot give a medical opinion or say how well someone might do as we are not part of the care. Do talk to the doctor involved and ask these questions to get answers that are more specific to the person's situation.

However, I can add links to pages on the Whipple operation, the follow-up involved, and some further resources that may be helpful.

The Whipple's is a major surgery and is not offered lightly to the patient. The doctors will only offer this if they feel it has the potential to be an effective treatment and that the patient can make a good recovery.

Sometimes the treatment options and decisions given by the doctors can be overwhelming and a lot to think through. Talking to the team involved, the specialist nurse (CNS) and maybe others who have been through it via a post to others on this forum, may give you more information.

Take care and I hope you get the information you need. If you want to give us a call and talk anything through then give us a call on 0808 800 4040, lines are open mon-fri, 9-5.
