Exercise and mobility issues

Hi, I have recently had a mammoplasty and waiting to have radiotherapy. I am 81.

i have been told that I must exercise more but I have  issues which restrict my movements as have scoliosis arthritis and an old compression fracture. I can do upper body chair exercises but walking is an issue as use either 2 sticks or a Walker and can’t stand for long.

i was always very active and my mobility issues are making me very frustrated. Any suggestions?

regards Phebie

  • Hi Phebie and thank you for your post

I am sorry to hear about your recent surgery and that you are now awaiting radiotherapy.

It sounds like you are trying to exercise your upper body through chair exercises which is a great thing to do, so don't underestimate the benefits of doing this.

I appreciate it must be frustrating to not be able to mobilise as well as you would like and wondering if you have had any input from a physiotherapist. If not do ask your GP if this would be possible.

Age UK also has some tips and suggestions about moving more.

I would like to say that it is often about just moving a little more that you already do. Even if that is standing more often and walking between rooms at home every hour or so as this can make a difference for many.

I hope this helps a little.

Do get back in touch if you have further questions.

    Take care

    Naomi
