Anti testosterone treatment and steroids

My friend is newly diagnosed and has started anti testosterone plus Arbiraterone his PSA has come down fro over 400 to 47 ,, they are now wanting to discuss prostate radiotherapy to add to the treatment ,, if the testosterone is working as well as it is what is the relative value of adding radiotherapy?

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm afraid as nurses, we cannot provide a medical opinion or say how anyone should be treated as we are not involved in your friend's clinical care. Only a specialist can do this.

But I can say that the doctors may suggest adding radiotherapy to work alongside the hormone treatment .While this treatment is very good at reducing PSA levels and controlling the cancer, it mainly works by slowing down the cancer or stop its growth. Radiotherapy directly targets cancer cells in the prostate or surrounding areas aiming to destroy or slow them down.

Your friend may find it helpful to discuss this with their specialist team why they think radiotherapy is necessary and what they hope to achieve with it. If your friend has a specialist nurse (CNS) involved in their care, then perhaps they can provide him with further information. He will often have to call and leave them a message and they will get back to him.

I hope this reply is of some use. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,
