Will the mastectomy go ahead?

I heard today my stage 4 cancer is being treated by a mastectomy and radiation.

They now have raised concerns about my chronic back pain and neuropathy which they are going to investigate by MRI scans.

If the cancer has spread to the spine does that mean the mastectomy will not take place and it will be palliative care?

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis of stage 4 breast cancer.

Stage 4 breast cancer means that the cancer has spread to another part of the body. So, if the doctors knew the staging when they offered you a mastectomy then I think this could still be going ahead.

While it is unusual to need to have a mastectomy with stage 4 cancer I cannot be sure this is the case for you so please do discuss with your team, in particular, your breast cancer nurse

I hope you get your MRI scan soon and know more about your situation.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care
