Radiotherapy machines

Have been recommended radiotherapy after successful breast cancer surgery. Am really claustrophobic and can t face the doughnut shaped equipment.   Have been given diazepam and a rearranged appointment fir a CT scan.   Will the following 5 sessions have to take place going through some sort of tunnel?

  • Hello cantakethegirl and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn that you need treatment for breast cancer, but pleased to read that your surgery went well. I hope you are feeling recovered.

I can appreciate you are feeling anxious before your radiotherapy, especially with having claustrophobia this must be difficult for you.

The CT scan is used to plan the radiotherapy, but the radiotherapy machine is different you don't go through a tunnel. They are big machines, you lie on the treatment couch, and the machine may be fixed and stay in one position or it may move around you, but you will not feel the treatment being given. You can read more information about radiotherapy and what it is and look at a video of a patient receiving radiotherapy on our website.

You could perhaps ask the radiotherapy department if you can visit the department before your treatment starts, so you can see what to expect. It would also allow you to talk through with them any concerns you have and how to manage your claustrophobia.

I hope this helps, If you would like to talk things through with one of our nurses, the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040 and we are available between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday

    Take care,

    Jemma
