Special scan at a London Hospital

Hi

as a result of an invited over 70 scan they found a problem. I then went for 3 further tests    lung function,     a PET SCAN        and a Bronchotomy.

dr rang after the last one and said I have a tumour and will be referred to the hospital for a special scan and as English wasn’t his first language I struggled to understand

what is the name of this scan?  And what is its purpose??

He also said I will speak to a surgeon regarding an operation to remove it. what is this scan for and should I be worried that an operation will already occur even before the results are known.

thanks for your help

  • Hi Lindad and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear that a problem was found on a scan you have recently had.

There are several scans and tests to diagnose lung cancer, so I am not exactly sure which specific scan was mentioned to you. It may have been an endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS-TBNA) .

This test can determine if an abnormal-looking area is cancerous. It involves using a narrow, flexible tube to examine the inside of your lungs, and samples can be taken for biopsies.

Perhaps you could consult your GP or the secretary of your hospital specialist, who may be able to provide you with the information you need.

I can appreciate there is a lot of uncertainty for you. I hope you know more about your situation soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards

    Tina
