28 year old with breast cancer

Hi. I'm 28 year old woman (29 in 4 days) and on the 12th December I found a lump in my left breast. I was straight in the GP, straight for a referral.

My first appointment at the hospital was 19th Dec, the clinician checked and said it felt like a cyst but I wouldn't be able to have an ultrasound until 31st. I was beside myself with worry so paid to go private. This was the 20th December and he said it was a fibroadenoma and was so confident, he didn't want me to pay for an ultrasound and let the NHS do their thing so that's what I did.

31st rolls around and the doctor then was also pretty confident it was a fibroadenoma but did an FNA for confirmation. My results day was on Monday 13th and I was greeted with a doctor and team of breast care nurses to be told my FNA came back with abnormal cells and they're shocked due to age, look of ultrasound and lack of family history. I was rushed through the next day for a mammogram and 5 core biopsies. 3 in the lump and 2 in the lymph nodes in my arm pit.

I don't find out until the 28th what the results are. Am I likely to be told I have cancer? Has this ever happened to anyone and had good news? Even the imaging doctor who did my biopsies said they would've said fibroadenoma too if they didn't know my cell biopsy results.

I have a 3 year old and I'm just besides myself

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about what's been happening and I can appreciate waiting for biopsy results is very stressful, and our minds often imagine the worst possible scenario.

Abnormal cells found in the FNA doesn't always mean cancer. They can sometimes appear because of benign (non-cancerous) conditions. Core biopsies are more accurate than an FNA and the doctors will use these results to figure out exactly what's going on.

I know it's easier said than done but try and take it one step at a time until you know more. Some people find talking it through with family and friends and keeping busy can sometimes help. Also try and focus on what you can control right now by eating a good diet, getting enough rest, and doing some gentle activities that you enjoy, The NHS website has some useful tips on breathing exercises for stress that you might find helpful.

I hope you know more soon. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Can I ask what benign conditions would show abnormal cells? I asked the Doctor this and I felt like he couldn't/wouldn't give me a straight answer. Would he know more than he's letting on? I.e. cancer cells and just wants a core biopsy to confirm before he says the word?

  • Hi there and thanks for getting back to us

I appreciate this must be such a difficult time for you and I really do hope you know more about your situation soon.

There are benign ( non cancerous ) breast conditions that cause abnormal cells including phyllodes tumours, pash Pseudoangiomatous stromal hyperplasia and others that you can read about on the Breast Cancer Now website, so do take a look.

However it is only going to be the biopsy results that can confirm what these are for you.

I do wish you all the best but do get in touch if you need to.

    Take care

    Naomi
