First appointment with the oncologist

I have my first appointment with the oncologist to get my biopsy and ultra sound results.

It is a 20 minute appointment is this the normal procedure please?

  • Hello Kayluc and thanks for your post,

It is quite normal to have an appointment when all the results are in, to explain what it all means. I am not sure what you are having investigated but normally every suspected cancer case is discussed in a large formal meeting where all the doctors involved in your care meet to discuss and confirm whether or not cancer is present and then what the next steps should be.

It is difficult as I am not involved in your case nor know what you are having investigated to say very much.

It can be helpful to take a close friend or a family relative in with so you can have someone else listening to what the doctor has to say.

Never be afraid to ask questions or get the doctor to repeat something if you haven't fully understood what they have said to you. You may have a list of questions that you want to ask the doctor so do write these down so you can go through any concerns that you might have.

If you would like to ring and discuss any of this with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a ring.

Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open 9 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine
