Prognosis for stage 4 melanoma

My partner has melanoma which has spread to lymph nodes (removed a year ago) and liver and lungs early 2024. Immunotherapy was unsuccessful and was withdrawn in November. He is hoping for 5 to 10 more years, but im anxious the time is much less. The consultant said "short years". I know everyone is different and nobody can predict the future. I would really like to know what an average prognosis would be, Thanks

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your partner.

It is very difficult for us to predict how long someone has got without being involved in their care. There are other factors that doctors take in to account when assessing someone's outlook. This will include someone's general health, whether they are able to tolerate other treatment to help control the cancer as well as other factors such as age.

When patients and their relatives ask 'how long someone has got?' 'Doctors try and give a general prognosis as they are basing this on other patients that have gone before but even doctors involved in someone's care can't accurately predict as everyone's situation is slightly different.

We have general survival statistics for melanoma on our website.

If you or your partner would like to ring and talk any of this through with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are welcome to give us a call.

The number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
